Laser Profilers

Using our extensive experience in laser profiling, CIA Engineering has developed technologies for measuring surface profiles using a line laser for illumination.

Typical applications:

Measuring the internal shape of vessels or pipes to check for deformation,
loss of lining, etc.
Measuring polyurethane foam slabstock buns height, width and top profile.
On-line measurements provide real-time feedback on foam bun
profile and guaranteed minimum sizes.
Measuring profiles of extruded rubber or plastic to check for design
conformance.

When used on a conveyor, CIAE's laser profiling technology has a number of advantages over traditional conveyor weighing systems:

Surface profile measurement allows for material or component size or
volume calculation;
Accuracy does not degrade for light conveyor loading, right down to 0% flow;
Rapidly varying loads or volumes can be measured;
The system is non-contacting and does not wear;
The system can be mounted anywhere on the conveyor, close to the head or
feed ends or inclines.

CIAE’s laser profiler technology can be supplied as an integrated package, including:

Laser head for monitoring above conveyor;
Controller/processor with touch screen for monitoring at remote operation
station;
Optional custom application software to process profile data for specific
requirements.

Typical Specifications:

Conveyor/product widths of <1 ft. up to 6 ft.;
Conveyor/product speeds up to 10 ft./sec or more;
Up to 30 full-width (up to 600 points across the profile) scans per second;
<1% full-scale accuracy, regardless of material density.

Typical Outputs:

Instantaneous cross section area;
Instantaneous flow rate, using conveyor speed signal;
Average or cumulative flow rate;
Surface profile slope;
Profile conformance to design spec;
Measurement of "lumpiness" of conveyed product.
